The Kauban team is proud of our very own Atty. Ria Lidia Espina, who is one of the individuals conferred with the laurel “Talento Cebuano” last May 11, 2019 at the awarding ceremony held at the Ayala Activity Center, Cebu City.
Talento Cebuano is a special tribute given to a Cebuano, or adopted Cebuano, for his or her contribution to the community and whose success story serves as an inspiration for many people.
Ria’s story centers around her passion to serve through her profession’s associations — the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, among others, as well as her devotion to teaching law, which gives her the opportunity to impart not only her knowledge and experience but also inculcate the values that elevate the practice of law.
She spearheads the anti-bullying campaign of IBP Cebu Chapter, an advocacy that she shares with former chapter president Atty. Mundlyn Misal Martin. Recently, she went on a roadshow among Cebu barangays educating people on the value of their votes where she advocated for “no vote-selling and no vote-buying”.
She is also proud of her involvement in the IBP Cebu’s Trial Academy, which is the first of its kind in the country. The Trial Academy is an institution that teaches young lawyers comport and decorum at court, how to write a pleading, how to set up a law firm, how to do direct examination, how to draw up judicial affidavits, among many things. Every Saturday for three months, newly minted lawyers who are IBP members can attend classes for free, and learn the ropes of being in court.
“The purpose of the academy is to be able to produce not just valued lawyers in society, but also lawyers with values,” she said.
Her service philosophy also includes setting up a cooperative-style of providing financial support for fledgling lawyers. This philosophy is extended to the community where she also joins fellow lawyers in the chapter’s legal aid program.
Ria is the only daughter of Emmanuel and Isabel Espina. Her intelligence and initiative brought her to heights of academic excellence in the University of the Philippines, University of San Carlos & University of Cebu School of Law, and professional practice as a Certified Public Accountant at Joaquin Cunanan/Price Waterhouse, to a legal associate at SyCip Salazar Hernandez Gatmaitan and AVP for Legal and Contracts at Aboitiz Construction Inc. and law professor at the University of Cebu, and the president of Integrated Bar of the Philippines Cebu Province. She serves as the Icon for young women professionals and empowered community leader.
Ria’s Talento Cebuano Award of Excellence in Academic and Legal Profession was conferred by Glenn Pajares, Dean of the University of San Jose Recoletos’ Arts and Sciences.
The Talento Cebuano awards program is spearheaded by Speechcom International with its Founder Dr. Mila C. Espina, who is the past president of Zonta Club of Cebu 1 and former Dean of the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
Congratulations Atty. Ria! May you continue to advance business and communities.
