The fun of being a lineman

Being a lineman must be a challenging role that demands focus and attention. But who said that linemen can’t have fun?

At AboitizPower Distribution Utilities (AP DU), there’s a time to work hard, and definitely, a time to play harder. This idea of a fun working environment gave birth to AP DU’s Rodeolympics, which kicked off last July 14 at the Technical Training Grounds in Midland Village Maa, Davao City.

Thirty-five linemen from AP DU’s seven business units namely Davao Light (DLPC), Visayan Electric (VECO), Cotabato Light (CLPC), and the four Enerzones: Subic, Mactan, Balamban, and LiMA, participated in the event.

The participants were regrouped to encourage unity and camaraderie among the different groups of AP DU. Through fun relays, they were able to exhibit their skills in the operation and replacement of power accessories, grounding, fuse replacement, installation of house-meter, as well as hurtsman rescue. The linemen were also able to share their day-to-day tasks through an exciting quiz game.

The champions of AP DU’s first ever Rodeolympics were Fernando Genotivo and Jeovanni Tuquib (DLPC), Roderick Quinones, Alcher Tagsip, and Marlon Otero (VECO), Adellene Merciadez (CLPC), and Donald Guibao (Enerzone group).

Apart from promoting fun at work, the Rodeolympics is also AP’s way of recognizing and appreciating the significant role of linemen in its distribution business. Moreover, it serves as a platform for linemen to continuously learn from each other’s best practices.

AP has time and again proven that there’s always a better way of doing things. While AP DU spearheaded the activity, led by EVP and COO Jaime Jose Aboitiz, together with the unit heads namely Rodger Velasco (DLPC), Anton Mari Perdices (VECO), Jude Sanchez (CLPC), and Jay Navarro and Ben Arkocncel (Enerzone group), team leaders and team members from other AP businesses also expressed their support and joined in the fun.

AP DU has been a distributor of safe, reliable, and reasonably priced electricity for 70 years now. The Rodeolympics is a testament to the group’s endeavor to empower its team members, inspiring them to constantly learn and grow so that they may continue to serve customers the Aboitiz way.
