More pawikan nests found at the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park (and two turtles rescued!)

Another pawikan nest was found at the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park in Davao City on Feb. 24. The nest is the fourth one discovered for 2017 and the 21st pawikan nest found since the preservation efforts for the park started in early 2014.

The mother pawikan that has lain eggs in three other sites at the park this year is believed to be the same one that made the latest nest. Female pawikans usually lay eggs three to five times in a season. That mother pawikan is also likely the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) that was rescued in the mangrove area of the park on Feb. 25.

Residents from Barangay Bucana, Davao City, also turned over a pawikan to the Park after it was found trapped in the net of fishermen. The two sea turtles were released back into the sea with the assistance of the local office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

BROUGHT TO SAFETY. A big Hawksbill Sea turtle was rescued from being trapped in the mangrove area of the Cleanergy Park.

The Aboitiz Cleanergy Park serves as a sanctuary for the critically endangered Hawksbill Sea turtle. Through its “BetterWorld for the Pawikan” campaign, Aboitiz aims to protect turtles and other species that have made the park their home. With your help, the park can realize its goal of making a safe haven for the pawikan.
