More than 370 educators from Central Visayas, Bicol and Davao Region participated during the nationwide pilot sessions of Project Pink, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of City Savings Bank (CitySavings) to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention among public school teachers.

In Cebu, the bank collaborated with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. – Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (RAFI EJACC) and the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 7 to conduct Project Pink in two batches last April 18-19 and October 19-20.

Our country has been identified in Asia as one of the countries with the highest incidence rate of breast cancer. This fact prompted us to initiate efforts to look after the welfare of the Filipino public school teachers by providing a venue to create awareness and reduce the risk of breast cancer cases among women.

-Paula Ruelan, Reputation Management Head, CitySavings

Breast surgeon and advocate Dr. Janice Kanico emphasized that “based on statistical data, the risk of women having the said disease becomes higher when they get older.  1 out of 68 women can acquire it by age 40 so when you reach this age, yearly mammogram and breast ultrasound is highly recommended.”

To instill courage, Cebuano cancer survivor Noma Carbonilla shared a snippet of her battle, “At first, I didn’t know I had cancer since there were no initial signs until my family told me that I was losing weight. We just have to trust the Lord and fear nothing about cancer”.

In Legazpi and Davao, CitySavings partnered with local oncologists and their respective DepEd Regional Offices last October 27 and November 20 respectively.

Ma. Virgie Daguinsin, a registered nurse from Legazpi City highlighted the importance of breast cancer awareness, “Always go to your physicians for consultation, don’t be afraid of lumps because not all are cancerous. Make it a habit to perform a monthly self – breast examination” she said.

Aside from fighting breast cancer, this forum has taught me several lessons particularly the importance of early treatment. I hope Project Pink will reach as many women as it can.
