The Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ regional office conducted a wetlands conservation orientation at the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park on Feb. 3 to celebrate World Wetlands Day.
The event, which revolved around the theme “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction,” was attended by participants from DENR-XI and Davao Light.
The orientation focused on raising awareness on the importance of wetlands in safeguarding against severe weather conditions and in disaster preparedness. According to the Ramsar Convention Secretariat, protected wetlands act as shields from floods and as nutrient caches that aid in the restoration of affected croplands.
Through the Cleanergy Park, Aboitiz Foundation and Davao Light seek to create a home for endangered and endemic wildlife by maintaining a thriving biodiversity preserve and help communities build back better by promoting stewardship of mangrove clusters and other plants that serve as buffers from harsh weather events.
