Functional Development Clusters Hold Recognition Day

Marla Guevarra | September 2, 2019

Last August 16 marked the culmination of all the hard work put in by participants in the year-long learning journey as part of the Functional Development Cluster program. Functional Development Clusters were established in 2017 to prepare the Aboitiz Group’s collective pool of talents for future roles in the organization. Each cluster went through its own set of learning activities specifically designed for its respective functional and leadership needs.

In his opening remarks, AEV President & CEO Erramon I. Aboitiz congratulated the finishers and offered encouragement:

As you return to your respective teams and responsibilities, let me emphasize that the Functional Development Cluster program is not some magic spell that gives you superpowers to overcome challenges more easily. Do your best not to fall for that misconception. Remember that perfection is not a prerequisite of leadership. And neither is successful leadership about outshining the person next to you, your boss or subordinate, or being better than everyone else in this room. Effective leadership is about being better from the inside out, constantly being self-aware of our strengths and weaknesses, exercising mindfulness both in the words that we speak and, more importantly, in our actions.

Recognition

The Finance Development Cluster participants learned new and useful skills from Harvard Business School’s online courses on Becoming a Better Manager and Leading with Finance. They successfully ended the program through a presentation of financial and strategic analysis for different companies to a panel of Aboitiz Group Leaders last June 10, 2019. The Finance Development Cluster was led by Manuel Lozano, Marc Dy and Judd Salas.

The HR Development Cluster participants had insight and experience exchange with leaders like Sabin Aboitiz and Manuel Lozano, and Tyler Hosford of Gartner within a full 1-year learning cycle. They capped off the program last June 28, 2019 through a “shark tank”-type session where three teams worked with project sponsors for months and presented their cases for change and opportunity. Their projects were Internal Mobility Transformation, Creating a Culture of Feedback and Manager Development. The HR Development Cluster was led by Susan Valdez, Ruby Jaucian and Malou Marasigan.

The Legal Development Cluster participants went through a 4-week course on Leadership, Teamwork and Negotiation and a 10-week course on Making Successful Decisions through the Strategy, Law and Ethics Model. As their culminating project, they were asked to analyze the case study entitled “From Brussels to Paris,” and apply the lessons they learned from the courses in coming up with action plans. The Legal Development Cluster was led by Manuel Colayco and Pagan Arches-Reyes.

The Technology Development Cluster participants took a 6-week leadership development course entitled “Leading Innovative Change” from UC Berkeley.  The course helped them gain a greater understanding of our company’s needs and more effectively identify and implement innovation opportunities in a fast-moving and competitive landscape. They held their culminating event last July 17, and presented their capstone projects entitled Eurek-A, Prudent and Pasabay. The Technology Development Cluster was led by Jojo Guingao, Hoton Elicano and Ricardo Lacson.
