For members of Rizal-based SAMALA, a women’s sewing organization, the partnership that they started with our 2016 GFR winners from De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde (DLSU-CSB) epitomizes how we weave our brand promise of advancing business and communities in every endeavor that we pursue.
After winning the competition, the DLSU-CSB students taught SAMALA members pattern making, hem finishing, and other techniques, which enabled them to improve the quality of their products and create new ones. The students also emphasized recycling and repurposing waste fabrics that would have been thrown away, showing them that these can still be made useful and beautiful.
The combined startup cash prize and fresh revenues from the new products enabled SAMALA to fully pay their debt while allotting extra to invest in equipment. Inspired by this small act of empowerment, the women of SAMALA is now reaching out to other women’s groups in a pay-it-forward manner.
“Iyong na-share dati sa amin ng mga students, shinare din namin sa iba. Iyon din kasi ang goal na gusto namin…na hindi lang kami ang makinabang. Gusto rin naming na makatulong din sa iba.”
(We imparted to others what the students previously taught us. That was what we wanted…for us not to be the sole beneficiaries. We also want to help others).

Nothing compares to that rewarding feeling of being able to have better life while doing the things you love. GFR alumna Miel visits Riza every now and then, continuing to weave dreams of what SAMALA could still do. Indeed, the fabric of this partnership is strengthened by a common purpose of creating a better world for women in our society.
