Students and digital enthusiasts from Iloilo gamely welcomed UnionBank as it organized its latest < U >HACK & PL@Y hackathon series and its first in the province.
Held last September 15-16, 2017 at the Iloilo Convention Center, more than 200 participants composed of 162 students and 47 professionals joined the 2-day hackathon.
President and COO Edwin R. Bautista opened the < U >HACK ceremonies by welcoming the participants at the event.
After explaining to the participants the mechanics and criteria for judging their digital applications, everyone were off to develop their work.
UnionBank executives and event partners served judges while select UnionBank employees served as mentors to the participants.
The Grand Winner for the Iloilo hackathon was Team WIT, students from Western Institute of Technology, who won the P60,000 prize. Via subscription, their Learn N’ Play Mobile app provides parents the means to select and rent learning materials for their children based on the kid’s age and gender.
First runner-up went to Team T-Loan for their T-Loan app which aims to serve the unbanked and underbanked sector of tricycle drivers by providing them quick processing of their loans using the app.
Second runner-up was awarded to the Team Programming Circle for developing a Hardware unit that notifies and alerts registered individuals via their mobile phones in the event there are sudden tremors in their areas such as landslides or earthquakes.
Aside from the hackathon, a Hackademia lecture was also held during the event where community teachers listened to resource persons on digital learning.
This is the third UnionBank < U >HACK for this year. The first one was held in Cebu while the second one, primarily focused on kids, was held in Manila, both held last July. Expect a few more hackathons this year to be held in other strategic places in the Philippines.
