Green Fashion Revolution winner boosts sewing skills of women’s group

Green Fashion Revolution (GFR) 2016 Grand Champion De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde culminated the series of capacity-building trainings through a ceremonial turnover of the PHP 50,000 start-up capital from Aboitiz Foundation to their chosen beneficiary, Samahan ng mga Mananahi ng Lupang Arenda (SAMALA) last April 27, 2016.

The GFR 2016 winners are implementing a CSR project, which aims to grow SAMALA’s means of livelihood by teaching its members new skills like cutting, pattern-making and sewing.

With this, its members are now equipped with better skills that will improve the quality of their products.

A brainchild of Aboitiz scholars, the Green Fashion Revolution has become a platform to raise awareness on the importance of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and to provide the youth with an opportunity to help other people.

“Thank you Aboitiz. You have given us the opportunity to open our hearts, open our minds, that the world is so small here in Benilde and there are so many more things that fashion and design can really do.

– Mela Lazatin, Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission and Student Life, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde

“We are hoping that our CSR project with SAMALA will help them expand their business. It’s our simple way of paying it forward after our awesome GFR experience. There’s really so much worth winning [GFR Manila 2016]. As a fashion student and a future designer, GFR opened our eyes to the real situation we are in — how so many things go to waste. We are now more conscious and we think about how we can become ‘green’ in our designs. GFR made us realize that as young as we are, we have to do something.

– Miel Avena, Benildean fashion design student and GFR 2016 winner
