True to its brand promise of curating experiences and nurturing communities, AboitizLand toured 101 grade six students on February 10 to culminate the eighth year of the You Can Be A Hero Program.
The culture and heritage tour started in the Heritage of Cebu Monument where tourist guide PG Guba explained the depictions in the tableau and described the Cebuano’s way of life spanning from the pre-Hispanic era. The group then visited the Casa Gorordo Museum where they experienced an interactive tour showing the Parian district before the onset of World War II. In addition, they were also able to get a glimpse of the life of the Gorordo’s. The participants then headed to the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu where curated relics and religious artifacts were on display. The final stop was Fort San Pedro where the kids learned about the former army garrison and defense structure.
The You Can Be A Hero Program is an enhanced learning program which provides a series of 2-hour supplementary academic sessions every Friday to the Grade 6 pupils of Don Calixto C. Yongco, Sr. Elementary School, which is located near AboitizLand’s Pristina North and Pristina North Residences. Conducted by AboitizLand team members, it is designed to reinforce lessons in the school curriculum while motivating children to pursue higher education. In 2012, it was recognized in the Aboitiz Groupwide Inspired by Passion Team Awards in the Driven to Serve – CSR category.
On its eighth year, 107 pupils have already completed the program with 20 fully committed AboitizLand volunteers rendering over 40 hours of teaching. Extending it to Plaridel Elementary School in Lipa, Batangas, 38 Lima Land volunteers willingly rendered 21 hours of academic sessions allowing 109 students to finish the course within just two years.
Enduring and expanding through the years, the You Can Be A Hero Program is one of the ways AboitizLand provides better education to drive change for a better world.
