Testament to the growing public interest on the Gabii sa Kabilin (Night of Heritage), more people were observed to have visited at least 40 museums and historical sites in four metropolitan cities of Cebu last May 27.
An estimated 5,000 people toured museums, churches, public buildings, and old structures in the cities of Cebu, Talisay, Mandaue and Lapulapu from 6 p.m. until midnight during the said event. Around 3,000 joined the Gabii sa Kabilin last year.
This year, the opening was held at the grounds of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI)-owned Casa Gorordo Museum, where the RAFI-led Gabii sa Kabilin was opened the first time 10 years ago.
Convinced of the role Gabii sa Kabilin plays in increasing public awareness on Cebuano culture and heritage, no less than Cebu City Acting Mayor Margarita Osmeña suggested that it be held twice a year, the second part preferably in December.
Osmeña, who authored the resolution declaring that the Gabi sa Kabilin be held every last Friday of May, the national heritage month, said five hours is not enough to visit all participating sites.
