Over the last decade, AboitizPower has focused on strengthening its businesses, processes, policies, and systems. With the launch of its 1AP Culture, the company is empowering team members on how they live up to the company’s expectations in the following aspects: High Performance, Owner’s Mindset, Learning and Growth, Atmosphere, and Values.
Around 400 Manila-based AboitizPower team members gathered last June 29 at the Manila Polo Club for a special event that also marked the beginning of a series of activities that re-articulate the 1AP Culture. The program is designed towards ensuring the company’s culture statements are clear and simple for all to understand and live by every day. By bringing everyone on the same page, the team achieves consistency across everything AboitizPower says or does as an organization.
We have come this far and I believe that we will move further into the future and fulfill our purpose if we all live our values and our culture.

Meanwhile, AboitizPower Chief Operating Officer Emmanuel V. Rubio said the 1AP Culture launch was necessary to continuously improve collaboration among AP business units and to give team members a clearer sense of belonging and purpose.
“Together, we will seize every opportunity to live our values. Let us help each other live the values and hold each other responsible for being role models,” Rubio added.
Danel C. Aboitiz, President and Chief Operating Officer of AP’s Coal Business Unit, explained that there are three elements that are necessary to building a high-performing team — clarity of purpose, alignment of interests, and alignment of values.
Lino M. Bernardo, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of AP’s Generation Business Group, said having an owner’s mindset means treating the company as if it were one’s own.
Aligned with the AP value of Responsibility, Bernardo urged the AP team to remember that they are here to make sure they leave things better than when they found them.
Sandro A. Aboitiz, AboitizPower First Vice President for Energy Trading and Sales, meanwhile, emphasized how learning comes in different forms, even through one’s successes and mistakes.
Anton Mari G. Perdices, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of AP subsidiary Visayan Electric Company (VECO), stressed the importance of having a place where one can work and have fun at the same time.
He said that in AboitizPower, each team member gives and earns mutual respect by caring for each other, by being committed to what they set out to do, and by showing competence in their jobs.
“So our challenge for this culture aspect, which is a challenge that I think most of us will welcome is, with trust, respect, empowerment, hard work, and play, let us continue to build a more positive atmosphere in AP,” he added.
Jaime Jose Y. Aboitiz, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the AP’s Distribution Business Group, said hearing about the 1AP Culture is only the beginning.
“Making our culture alive depends on the leaders, and you and me, all of us,” he said.
Moving forward, he said we all need to be aware of AP’s five values and AP Culture statements; to understand by seeking clarity and having conversations with leaders and teams about AP values and culture, and to live, which he described as the most challenging part.

The launch of 1AP Culture was conceptualized when AP leaders gathered at the beginning of 2018 to revisit the culture statements that are being communicated within the organization.
After Manila, there will be similar events to be staged in Cebu, Baguio, and Davao.
