Mayor Sara Duterte led the March 21 release of the first Pawikan hatchlings for 2017.
The newly hatched pawikans were from the nest found on Jan. 10. The hatching rate for the nest was 96%, with 169 hatchlings released back to the sea. Meanwhile, the nest found on Jan. 25 is expected to hatch in the week of March 27. We hope that when the females mature, they will return to the Park to lay the next generation of Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), which are considered to be critically endangered.
Despite just having given birth herself, Mayor Sara’s love for the baby pawikans matched the inspiring event, as this is the biggest number of pawikans released by the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park to date.
The release was also attended by Davao Light Executive Vice President and COO Rodger Velasco, DENR officers, barangay officials, Davao Light Kaibigans, Apo Agua team members and local residents.
