Meet Tony Canova, new ACO board advisor

AE Team | January 30, 2019

In December 2018, the Aboitiz Group announced changes in the board membership of Aboitiz & Company (ACO), including the appointment of Mr. Antonio Canova as new board advisor. Aboitiz Eyes is pleased to introduce Tony to our fellow team members through this mini-feature.

Tony Canova is a grandson of Don Ramon Aboitiz through the latter’s daughter Maria Luisa. Though mostly based in the United States, he maintains very close ties to his Cebuano roots and even still speaks the language. His father,  Edson H. Canova, was an executive at Aboitiz for 25 years before retiring and moving his family to the United States.

Professionally, Tony has built up a solid background in various leadership roles in numerous American companies. Most recently, he was Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging station and network provider in the United States.

Tony began his career with KPMG LLP, eventually becoming an audit partner where he led mergers and acquisitions and IPOs in the tech industry.  After KPMG Tony became Chief Financial Officer of Wireless, Inc., a wireless broadband equipment manufacturer and then Brocade Communications, a publicly listed storage network company.  He then became a serial start-up entrepreneur and for two decades served companies like 3 Leaf Systems, Ankena, and Qumu.

Tony, who obtained his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Santa Clara University in California, retired from working full-time in November 2018. With that came the opportunity to be more involved in the Aboitiz Group. He made his first official appearance in his new role during the post-AboitizPower Management Conference 2019 gathering last January 18 where he got up on stage to sing for A-People.

Tony treated AboitizPower team leaders to a song at the company’s annual management conference in January 2019.

Tony is married to Elena Gutierrez Aboitiz, granddaughter of Luis Aboitiz, who is the brother of Ramon and Vidal. They have raised their three children Andrea, Sofia, and Nicolas in the San Francisco Bay Area, where they all still reside.
