Volunteer firefighters from Republic Cement’s Teresa Plant had the privilege of representing the municipality of Teresa at the 3rd Rizal Provincial Fire Olympics.
Organized by the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Bureau of Fire Protection of Rizal Region 4-A, the event was held at Club Manila East on March 23. The annual Fire Olympics gathers professional and volunteer fire brigades and provides volunteer firefighters with an opportunity to benchmark and learn from each other the best way to respond to fire emergencies.
The day’s events started with Berong Bumbero, the Bureau of Fire Protection’s mascot, lighting up the Olympic torch. Six teams representing different municipalities of Rizal were classified into two categories: barangay and industrial, with the Republic firefighters competing under the industrial category. The Industrial Category had three events: (1) Rescue and Transfer Relay, (2) Combination of Busted Hose and Up-the Ladder, and (3) Fire Extinguishment.
The Republic Fire Brigade led by Jun Mateo of the plant’s packhouse operations, had five members selected from the ranks and was supplemented by ten other members from the plant’s contractors who volunteered for the special service.
Only recently trained by the Teresa Bureau of Fire on March 17, the Team won 2nd place in the second event and ranked 3rd overall.
