Republic Cement’s Iligan Plant turns 50!

Myle Macalam | Sept. 15, 2017

Republic Cement celebrates the golden anniversary of its Iligan Plant this year. The plant’s employees have programmed a year-round celebration to mark this milestone, kicking off with the launch of 50 Ways of Giving Back, a volunteerism program where employees organize their own outreach activities as a form of giving back to the communities where the plant operates.

Thus far, groups of employees have organized donation drives for the earthquake victims of Surigao, planted mangroves to regreen nearby Bayug Island, donated wheelchairs to differently abled members of the community, conducted an engagement activity for the young students of Ampucao Elementary School and given slippers and school supplies to students of Taluntunan Elementary School.

Recently, they also organized a family day in Blue View, a nearby mountaintop resort in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, where, for a day, colleagues and family members spent time together to celebrate five decades of the plant’s colorful history. Employees had a lot of fun as they swam in the pool and explored the game booths spread across the resort then took on challenges that earned them some tokens and qualified them for a raffle which had an iPad Air as the main prize.

Aside from the fun, games, and plentiful food and drinks, there was also a short program where citations were given to service awardees, several of whom served the plant for 30 years. In his welcome remarks, Plant Manager Mike Madayag cited the closeness and camaraderie among Iligan Plant employees as one of its strengths and exhorted his team to remain as strong as ever, and ready to face the challenges of the coming years. Responding on behalf of the awardees, Plant Controller Jong Estolloso stressed that despite the many changes and challenges that the plant has undergone over time, it has always been loved by its employees and the communities from the very start of its operations five decades ago until now.

Over time and through several changes of shareholders and management teams, Republic Cement’s Iligan Plant has become known for having a strong and resilient team, united as one and eager to break their own records in order to earn them a top spot among the Group’s plants.

In spite of the complexity of its production technology, the plant’s leadership has been able to harness the strength and potential of its diverse team. It has close to doubled its cement production volume in the past seven years and has broken its monthly dispatch record many times.

With its mix of hardworking Bisayas and Iliganons and a sprinkling of seasoned veterans from the other plants, Team Iligan exudes energy and dynamism. Buoyed by its never-say-die attitude, it rightly deserves its nickname – Team DASIG.

Having fifty years of experience now tucked under its belt, Team Iligan is bravely forging onward, ready to give their best in the years to come.
