Building a future from livelihood starter kits

Anna Carreon | July 3, 2018

At the core of every successful community is a group of people working hand-in-hand towards a single vision. This is how one would describe the members of two Ozamiz-based organizations, Unity Association and Clarin National High School Family Multipurpose Cooperative, who found new livelihood opportunities at Pilmico’s Mahalin Pagkaing Atin Food, Agri, and Livelihood Expo held last June at their city.

Unity Association was formed in Brgy. Lagupan to organize and sustain the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (or 4Ps) social assistance and developmental projects in their community. The group added a new way to generate income for its members when they were chosen to be among the beneficiaries of an egg laying machine during the expo.

Masayang masaya kami at excited. Pinag-usapan namin ito at plinano na ang sistema mula paglinis hanggang sa pag-alaga para handa kami pagdating ng egg laying machine. (We are very happy and excited. We’ve been discussing and planning our system, from cleaning it to taking care of the poulty, so we can be ready for when the egg laying machine arrives.)

–Brengelina Magtortor
President
Unity Association

“Malaking tulong ‘yun [egg-laying machine] sa amin kasi may extra income nang darating,” Member Queeniebelle Sungi added.

Brengelina happily shared that their neighbors have expressed willingness to help their budding egg business grow. For example, local bakery owners have pledged to source eggs from the cooperative.

“Pagdating ng panahon, gusto ko pa sana ito rin palaguin pero bago iyon, tulong-tulong namin pagdedesisyunan kung ano ang susunod na gagawin at kung anong mas makabubuti sa aming komunidad,” Brengelina added. For them, open communication and cooperation between the association and the community are key factors in their plans to make their business a success.

Meanwhile, Clarin National High School Family Multipurpose Cooperative started over two decades ago as cooperative providing lending services and other means of support to its members and their community. The group, which is composed mostly of teachers, was one of the cooperatives that received a bakery starter kit from Pilmico, also at the Mahalin Pagkaing Atin expo.

Masaya kami dahil it is an opportunity para ma-serve yung kabataan sa aming paaralan. Makakagawa na kami ng quality na pan de sal at breads na mapapakain sa mga bata.

–Julmar Salvacion
Chairman
Clarin National High School Cooperative

Vevencio Lagamon Jr., co-op manager said that the bakery starter kit is a big leap towards their long-term goal of providing quality and affordable food for students and the community.
