With blockchain expected to be among the biggest technologies that will shape the world in the near future, UnionBank is now at the forefront of training Filipinos to become skilled in blockchain.
UnionBank’s Blockchain Institute produced its first batch of a hundred graduates who completed their six-month training course covering NEM, Etherium, Hyperledger, and Corda. This was organized in partnership with NEM, IBM, Consensys, and R3 in addition to Design Thinking and Start-Up Thinking workshops.
Around half of the graduates are now employed by the Bank and its subsidiaries and the rest went on to join other companies upon UnionBank’s recommendation.
The Blockchain Institute was started in 2018 with the aim of supplying the ecosystem with more blockchain developers. The students — who mostly took up information technology, computer science, and engineering courses from different colleges and universities in the country — were sourced via various channels including hackathons and social media. They were taught not just blockchain codes but also actual use cases and blockchain solutions.

Brent, himself a product of UnionBank’s Iloilo Hackathon and is now with UnionBank’s subsidiary, encouraged his fellow graduates to make the most out of what he described as a life-changing opportunity.
“Let’s continue to move forward, bringing the knowledge that we gained and using it for the right purpose. Everything is just beginning. Let’s start to own the future,” he said.
According to UnionBank President & CEO Edwin Bautista, given that there were not enough blockchain developers in the country, the Bank pledged to the banking industry to train 100 blockchain developers, with expenses covered under its corporate social responsibility program.
Bautista sees the eventual takeover of blockchain as an opportunity to position the country’s workforce as a major source of blockchain professionals.

Statistics show that globally, there is a skyrocketing demand for blockchain-capable professionals.
In a report by job search marketplace Hired last month, it said demand for blockchain engineers has grown by around 517 % over the past year. This figure is seen to continue rising in the coming days.
