VECO Kaibigans won the top prizes in the Cebu City Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (CCTIPC) Chess Cup Tournament 2017 held on August 26 at the Cebu City Hall.
The tournament, which was open to chess enthusiasts who are regular employees of CCTIPC-member companies and organizations, was a gathering of the best chess players from the labor, management and government sectors.
A total of 52 players joined the tournament, which was governed by FIDE or WORLD CHESS FEDERATION laws of chess rapid play. The tournament used the swiss system format using the Game Point Scoring System – 15 minutes plus 5 seconds per move to finish the game – and was rated as an individual competition.
VECO Quality Control Inspector Nic Cuizon bagged the number 1 spot with 7 wins and no loss; VECO HR’s Germz Caballo finished second with 5 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw; while James Cabangahan ranked third with 5 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw.
The first, second, third and fourth placers were given a trophy each plus P10k, P7k, P5k and P3k prizes, respectively. All the players were given certificates and a consolation prize of P500 each.
Aside from VECO, the other players represented Aboitiz Power Corporation, the Public Attorney’s Office, Office for Senior Citizens Affairs, Cebu Country Club, City Savings Bank, Department of Labor and Employment, Coca-Cola, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Makati Development Corporation, Accounting Office Cebu City, Metrobank, Office of the Building Official, Cebu City Legal, Cebu City Hall Security Guards, Police Department, Alliance of Progressive Labor, Summit Circle and players from the local government unit.
