VECO energizes more remote communities in rural Cebu

Visayan Electric Company’s (VECO) Â Rural Electrification Project, in continuing to energize far-flung barangays in Cebu, recently put Sitio Calbasaan in Minglanilla town, Cebu on the power grid.

With electricity now available, residents of the remote upland village no longer need to rely on kerosene lamps to light their homes. Reading and learning has also gotten more convenient for young elementary school students of nearby Calbasaan Elementary School.

“We at VECO are very happy that you now have light. One of you might become mayor, vice mayor, governor or vice governor,” VECO Chief Operating Officer Anton Mari Perdices said, encouraging the kids in attendance at the short ‘switch on’ ceremony held at their school.

Since 2013, the Aboitiz utility company has brought economic development and improved quality of life to its beneficiaries. The first batch was made up of 22 sitios with while the current batch is composed of 13 sitios.

The project is funded by the government’s ER 1-94 mandate for power generation companies to allocate a percentage of its electricity sales to fund rural electrification and other programs. The Department of Energy targets to have 90% of all households in Region 7 powered by 2017.
