Aboitiz team members from Davao Light and Apo Agua were joined by fellow volunteers from Rotary Club of Davao, B. Carpio National High School, and Ateneo de Davao University at the shores of Aboitiz Cleanergy Park in Barangay Matina Aplaya on International Coastal Clean-up Day last September 15.
The group of 343, with sticks and trash bags in hand, collected trash that filled a total of 71 sacks in just a few hours, alarming to note since the surrounding waters serve as habitat to many marine species, including critically endangered sea turtles.
To cap off the activity, the volunteers engaged in a mangrove planting activity led by Ateneo de Davao University and B. Carpio National High School in support to the advocacy to preserve the pawikan nesting grounds.
The International Coastal Cleanup Day is a good reminder to all that the seas must be protected, cared for, and kept clean — all of which are part of everyone’s task as responsible citizens of the planet.
