WeatherPhilippines continues to strengthen its advocacy of creating a #WeatherWiser nation through its flagship training activity – Weather101 and Tropical Cyclone 101. This time, it targets one of the key stakeholders that need knowledge in weather calamities and disaster resilience – the education sector. Through a tripartite partnership with the CitySavings (CSB) Bank and the Department of Education, WeatherPhilippines is transforming schools into disaster-proactive communities.
The disaster preparedness of DepEd’s constituents is being strengthened through flagship training activities, namely Weather 101 and Tropical Cyclone 101. DepEd was chosen as a partner and training beneficiary because of their capability to pass on knowledge to future generations. The educators play an essential role in passing on the #WeatherWiser mindset to the developing minds of today.
Through the different channels where free, more localized, and accurate weather data is made available, WeatherPhilippines encourages the participants to come with a communication plan for schools to adopt before, during, and after times of disaster.
“In the Philippines, typhoons have always been foreseeable and expected. However, we have always been too reactive and most of the budget goes to disaster relief efforts,” said WeatherPhilippines General Manager Dave Michael Valeriano. WeatherPhilippines, together with CitySavings, is trying to transition from this setting to a more proactive involvement. “Even before the disaster hits, our schools could have the appropriate disaster resilience action plans to minimize the damage and ease bouncing back after the calamity,” he added.
“An integral part of disaster preparedness is learning and acquainting ourselves with basic weather knowledge for everyone to know what to anticipate and how to act in times of calamities. We will continue to partner with DepEd and WeatherPhilippines to ensure that this knowledge is cascaded not only to the educators but to their colleagues and especially to public students nationwide.”

To date, WeatherPhilippines and CitySavings have provided trainings to 1,129 DepEd personnel across the nation. More regional runs of the Weather 101 and Tropical Cyclone 101 are scheduled in the third and fourth quarter of this year.
