Notes by EMA: Winning vs. Losing and Its Ingredients

AN OUTLOOK CUM ATTITUDE PAPER
WINNING VERSUS LOSING
AND ITS INGREDIENTS

This is my own theory that I have learned over time. Theories are not a claimant of truth but rather an alternative theory to be challenged.

Your reaction, in any form, is appreciated to help me refine the theory.

——One can argue that base of Western Morality is Christianity. Perhaps one can argue this is not reality. Right and Wrong are developed concepts and perhaps we’re not there in the very early days.

——There is really no such thing as Right and Wrong. It has never been about right and wrong. Man invented this concept. The animal in us functioned with rules that are ingredients for winning or losing based on our basic instinct of survival.

——Morality is designed to civilize. Survival is about winning.

——I learned a long time ago that there is only one sin in life, that is to take what is not yours — take a life, take chattel, take dignity, take excitement, et. al. The opposite is to give — generosity is not a virtue; it is about long-term winning versus short-term gain.

——Just think how ridiculous the commandment “Do not covet thy neighbor’s wife” is. Do you really want to be married to a woman that no man wants to covet? I want everyone to covet my wife; now, do not touch. But if she wants to go, then she should tell you “I don’t like this anymore” and she should blow without my money. Commandments are about right and wrong — these are inventions. The concept of Moses coming down from the mountain with a tablet or rules is early day Hollywood. Some make sense though, i.e. those that are about taking what is not yours.

——Thou shalt not commit adultery is about taking what is not yours. Now don’t go further telling people that f–king is a sin because the sixth commandment was not about sex, as sex is not a moral issue. It is a human function like eating is. One produces babies, the other produces fat. The sixth commandment was about not taking what is not yours. Though shalt not bear false witness is about taking reputation that is not yours.

——Now it so happens that long-term winning is associated with what we feel is right and losing is associated with what we feel is wrong. Fairness, integrity, hard work is about winning long-term. Cheating people is about losing long-term.

——I ask for license to add two subjects, which I am developing as basic to winning and leadership. There is a question in my mind that a winning leader requires three traits. Bear with me and you will see why it belongs in this paper as they are about winning as a leader.

  1. Intelligence – The more complex and complicated the leadership role, the higher level of intelligence you need but you must have a higher relative intelligence always to win.
  2. Emotional Stability – Emotionally stable people cull emotion but never at the cost of losing passion. Richard Branson says all his decisions are emotional. I do not agree. He puts emotion and passion in the same bag. Passion is the fuel for energy. Emotion is about making decisions rooted in ego, pride, face, biases, and prejudice.
  3. Diligence and Discipline; Order and Structure.

Allow me to expound only on number 3 – D&D, O&S.

——I think there is a difference that maybe needs a different perspective for appreciation.

——I think that a business needs diligence and not just strict discipline. Discipline is about everyone arriving at 8 AM every morning without fail. Diligence is about doing your part of the value chain at the point in time and as expected by the next person on that value chain. The level of discipline for an accountant is different from that of a salesman. An accountant may have to arrive at 8:30 every morning but not so with a salesman. He may need to entertain at night and come in later. Both may still score 100 on the diligence scale. A factory worker should follow strict vacation days. A vice president does not have to. He works at night, during the weekends, and all the time. More flexibility on his holiday schedules is allowable. Both may score 100 on the diligence scale.

——I think a business needs order and not just structure. Structure is definitely part of order. Instructions have to follow a structure, i.e. the chain of command. Information and discussion can go anywhere without breaking order. Leaders who tell their people not to give any information if not through him are control freak morons who are trying to hide things.

——You can have diligence without strict discipline. You can have order without strict structure. I think one will win assuring diligence and being flexible with discipline; in the same breath, one will win assuring order without being a stickler for structure.

——It’s not being right or wrong that should concern us. It is long-term winning versus long-term losing that should concern us. This does not conflict with our traditional and invented concepts of morality. Winners long-term cannot win by breaking traditional rules of morality. I think that understanding the selfish reasons for long-term winning helps us understand better that we stick to those traditional parameters of morality not because they are right but because we will win.

——I also think that we need to peel out the noise; killing and stealing are wrong and not winning formulas. Sex is not a moral issue. Elegance and fairness in decision-making and in action are wise-winning strategies.

——I have learned that operating on the edges of structure and discipline are not hailed. I think that they should be. Win within the agreed parameters. Hail those with abilities to operate at the edges of agreements and rules and fire those who operate in the middle. Those who operate in the middle will not get you an edge. They will bring you to mediocrity.

MORALITY IS AN INVENTION OF MAN TO CONTROL BEHAVIOR.

OUR DNA IS BUILT FOR WIN OR LOSE, EAT OR BE EATEN, KILL OR BE KILLED AND NOT RIGHT OR WRONG? NOW LONG-TERM WIN IS COMPOSED OF MUCH OF WHAT WE THINK ARE RIGHT AND OR MORAL.
