Aboitiz Construction’s Balamban Shipbuilding Site Clocks In 6 Million Safe Man-Hours

SAFETY MILESTONE ACHIEVED. Aboitiz Construction recorded 6 million safe man-hours at its Tsuneishi Heavy Industries project site in Balamban, Cebu, from November 2022 to August 2024, highlighting its commitment to safety in the shipbuilding industry.

Aboitiz Construction achieved a major safety milestone by recording 6 million safe man-hours at its Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (THI) project site in Balamban, Cebu. This achievement covers the period from November 11, 2022, to August 31, 2024, highlighting the company’s commitment to workplace safety in the shipbuilding sector.

The firm’s project for THI involves critical shipbuilding processes, including steel processing, block assembly, and various outfitting tasks. The ships produced at the site are essential for global goods transportation, reinforcing Balamban’s standing as the shipbuilding capital of the Philippines.

To enhance safety, the project site routinely conducts safety awareness training, emergency preparedness and response drills, site inspections and audits, personal protective equipment checks, risk assessments, and daily toolbox meetings focused on safety topics.

All safety-related initiatives align with the company’s adherence to ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System), the global standard for effective occupational health and safety practices.

“Our achievement of 6 million safe man-hours is a testament to the dedication of our entire team. We remain committed to upholding the highest safety standards to ensure the well-being of our workforce,” said Aboitiz Construction Chief Operating Officer Ramez Sidhom.

The milestone marks a significant accomplishment for Aboitiz Construction, as the company continues to prioritize safety in all its operations, not only in Balamban but across all project sites nationwide.

Aboitiz Construction’s partnership with THI began with the launch of shipbuilding activities in Balamban, Cebu, back in 1996. As of August 2024, the company has successfully onboarded approximately 1,500 individuals for the project, with a significant portion of hires coming from the local community. This underscores the project’s extensive scale and reflects Aboitiz Construction’s dedication to supporting the local workforce by creating valuable employment opportunities.
