Cebu’s premier football tournament Aboitiz Football Cup kicked off on September 16 with a unique opening ceremony during the halftime break of the Philippine Football League (PFL) match between Global Cebu FC and FC Meralco Manila at the Cebu City Sports Center.
AboitizLand, in partnership with Cebu Football Association (CFA), decided to incorporate the opening of this year’s edition of the country’s longest running football league with the PFL action to showcase its program specifically designed for aspiring booters.

Through that, AboitizLand and CFA hopes that the players, both in the grassroots and higher level, will be inspired to excel in their field and become part of PFL someday.
“The Aboitiz Group, through the AboitizLand and Aboitiz Foundation, recognizes the importance of sports in the holistic development of our youth. Hence, supporting sports is something that we strongly advocate.”
-Patrick Reyes, President and COO, AboitizLand
In the past 18 years, the Aboitiz Football Cup, which serves as CFA’s selection process for the Philippine Football Federation, has produced national team players and has been instrumental in capacitating Cebuano coaches and referees.
With at least 4,000 players from around 130 teams competing in 18 different categories, games will be played during weekends at the Cebu City Sports Center, Ateneo de Cebu, Paref Springdale, and Don Bosco Technology Center.
The opening of the annual Aboitiz Football Cup continued with the ceremonial kick-off, lighting of torch, and fireworks show after the PFL match.
