DepEd’s Alternative Learning System (ALS) program was established to provide all Filipinos the chance to complete basic education in a mode that fits their distinct situations and needs. The program relies on ALS mobile teachers who take up the challenge of mentoring underserved out-of-school youth and adults in remote and faraway locations.
Jenelyn Baylon from Oriental Mindoro, an ALS mobile teacher, rides a motorcycle to cross mountains, fields, and rivers to reach remote, faraway places to teach in makeshift classrooms. It’s a trip that exposes her to dangers and natural hazards but serving others as an educator brings her joy despite the risks, even her own pregnancy.
In 2016, for its 50th anniversary, CitySavings reached out to a total of 933 ALS mobile teachers in 33 DepEd school divisions through a donation of laptops and LCD projectors, enhancing their work to bring literacy to areas unreached by formal education.

“With CitySavings’ help, I was able to implement ALS program, conduct advocacy and social mobilization, and implement e-learning in remote areas. Learners became more active, discussions are easier, and participation rate has increased,” said Jenelyn of her experience, adding that the bank has been a reliable partner of the educators in empowering communities through education.
True to its commitment in providing a venue for better education and participating in nation building, CitySavings will continue to support in addressing the learning needs of the marginalized and underserved citizens and the education sector through its CSR initiatives.
