Reverse Mentoring: #StudentAlways Mindset across four Generations in the Aboitiz Workplace

Based on the book The Remix: How to Lead and Succeed in the Multigenerational Workplace by Lindsay Pollack, the workforce today consists of mostly Millennials with Gen Z talents coming right behind them. This means each organization in the present will have a mix of all generations in their pool, from Baby Boomers – the longest working generation, all the way down to Gen Z.

Aboitiz Group is a strong believer in innovation, which has long been established as a core value. Aboitiz is always open to new ways of doing things and adapting to inevitable change, which has brought the company to where it is today. One way of nurturing this value is the Mentorship Partnership Program of Aboitiz Academy where Team Leaders and Team Members are encouraged to have a mentor related to their career path and aspirations. This follows a classic setup where an individual with a senior rank or with more professional experience mentors and coaches a talent with a junior rank. However, as the younger generation soon takes up more of the workforce, there are new skills and competencies that an employee will deem important today and in the future, hence one of the ways AEV is addressing the multigenerational workforce is by implementing the Reverse Mentoring Program.

I joined the Reverse Mentoring program since I believe that one of the best ways to learn is to teach what you’ve learned. It’s part of my resolution this year to do anything that scares me, so I could grow. – Danielle Soldevilla, Specialist – Labor Compliance

The Reverse Mentoring program is exactly what it means. Hinged on the Mentorship Partnership Program of Aboitiz, but with Managers, Supervisors/Officers, Specialists, and Associates mentoring, coaching, and sharing their expertise with the Aboitiz executives. The younger set of mentors in this program are equipped with skills in Google Data Studio, Mental and Physical Wellness, Graphic Design, Resilience, Sustainability, and Project Management, skills that progress over time as new innovations come about.

I joined as a mentor because I was seeing an increase in the demand for automation regardless of the type of job and that I had something to offer in that area. Aside from the satisfaction in sharing knowledge, reverse mentoring also gave me a glimpse how it is to be a mentor and that it can be a good learning exercise, too. I got to understand how other teams work and how they do it. – RJ Costanilla, Officer – IT Solutions Engineering

As of today, there is a total of 15 mentors in the Reverse Mentoring Program and definitely more to come as applications are open year-round.
