Project Ligtas Byahe: Visayan Electric distributes safety gears to habal-habal drivers

Motorcycle taxis, colloquially known as habal-habal, are an essential part of many Cebuanos’ daily commute. They take us to our destinations quicker compared to jeepneys, and cheaper compared to regular taxis.

However, due to factors such as insufficient budget or simply neglect, many of our habal-habal drivers still lack the proper gear required to safely operate along our busy streets. This is a risk that could potentially result in deadly accidents.

Recognizing this pressing issue, Visayan Electric launched Project Ligtas Byahe, an initiative aimed at equipping beneficiaries with essential motorcycle safety gear to help reduce the risks associated with riding and to promote road safety.

On August 2, Visayan Electric Kaibigan Batch 9, in partnership with the VECO Employees Multipurpose Cooperative (VEMCO), distributed various safety gear to the Banilad Cebu City Riders Association, a habal-habal association in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City. The gears included helmets, long-sleeved shirts, balaclavas, gloves, raincoats, hairnets, helmet disinfectants, and basic hand tools.

Ronie Pasumal, the association president, extended his gratitude to Visayan Electric for providing them with the much needed equipment.

“Among dakong pasalamat sa Visayan Electric Kaibigan batch 9 kay pinaagi sa ilang proyekto nga Ligtas Byahe, nakatabang kini sa among pang adlaw-adlaw nga panginabuhi,” he said.

This project is just one of the many corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities undertaken by Visayan Electric as part of its commitment to empower the lives of the communities it serves.
