Leading with Agility: Ryan’s Story of Servant Leadership

Ryan Vinegas, an IT professional within the Group, embarked on a journey of discovery and innovation when he ventured into the realm of Agile methodologies. Drawn by curiosity, he delved into Scrum revolutionize his approach to work. Little did he know that this exploration would lead to a Great Transformation in his ways of working.

When I first heard about Agile, my curiosity was piqued, so I decided to delve into one of its popular frameworks: Scrum. As someone working in IT, Scrum seemed like the perfect fit.

To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations initially. But to my surprise, the scrum training and certification I attended had a profound impact on me in several ways.

Scrum also promotes people empowerment… By embracing this mindset, teams become nimble, make decisions quickly, and deliver results faster.

First and foremost, it transformed my leadership style. Gone were the days of traditional authoritative leadership. Scrum introduced me to the concept of servant leadership, where the focus is on removing obstacles for the team, creating a safe environment for everyone’s input, and encouraging continuous improvement without dictating how things should be done.

Another aspect that stood out to me was the importance of team rapport. The Daily Scrum, a simple yet powerful practice, instills a habit of constant and effective communication. Transparency in sharing progress, openly discussing challenges or roadblocks, and learning from teammates fosters a strong team dynamic. These practices not only benefit project execution but also day-to-day operations.

Scrum also promotes people empowerment. It encourages self-management and instills a sense of responsibility and accountability among team members. By embracing this mindset, teams become nimble, make decisions quickly, and deliver results faster.

But perhaps the most significant shift was in customer centricity. Scrum places a strong emphasis on delivering value to the customer. The iterative and incremental approach ensures that what is being developed is usable and valuable to the end-users. By constantly seeking feedback and adapting to customer needs, Scrum leads to customer satisfaction and success.

Of course, there is still so much more to learn and apply when it comes to Scrum principles. As long as you recognize the value it brings, don’t hesitate to apply it in your work. Embrace the practice, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and always strive to improve. The journey with Scrum is both rewarding and exciting.
