The Great Transformation

Rising to the Challenge: Meet CJ Marin, GT Cup’s First MVP

by Jan Dolalas

Most of us start our day the same way — log in, check emails, tackle tasks. But every now and then, someone reminds us that even the most “ordinary” roles can spark extraordinary transformation.

That someone is CJ Marin. A familiar face from the Cyber Information Security (CIS) team, CJ just made history as the first-ever MVP of the GT Cup — and he’s proving that transformation isn’t about titles or roles, it’s about mindset.

GT Cup’s first Quarter MVP, CJ Marin, receives his prizes from Aboitiz Chief Engagement Officer, Sabin Aboitiz, and AEV Transformation Team’s Aly Virrey.

Breaking the Cycle

As a Business Services Officer, CJ once managed what many might see as a predictable cycle: budgets, contracts, reports. But CJ didn’t settle for “business as usual.” Instead, he asked: What if small changes could lead to big wins?

“My work used to be a predictable cycle,” CJ shares. “But small changes we introduced made a big difference in efficiency and collaboration. From streamlining BU roadshows to simplifying CIS services, we’ve cut costs, saved time, and allowed our teams to focus on more strategic work. It’s a shift from being reactive to becoming proactive and collaborative.”

Game On

When the GT Cup launched, CJ jumped in headfirst. His favorite events are the AI Challenges — not just for the points (though he’ll admit those were sweet), but for the way they changed his approach to work.

“More time collaborating and interacting with teammates. Also, I learned how to take initiative and spearhead some projects because of the challenges included in GT Cup. Move together, with one goal in mind.”

And he’s already thinking ahead. His dream GT Cup activity? A Cybersecurity Scavenger Hunt, where teams hunt down risks, answer best-practice challenges, and sharpen defenses — all while having fun.

Beyond the Trophy

For CJ, the MVP title isn’t just about topping the leaderboard.

“The real value of the GT Cup isn’t in the rankings—it’s in how it challenges your way of thinking,” he reflects. “Each activity is a chance to step outside your comfort zone, collaborate with new people, and sharpen your skills. That’s the transformation that really matters.”

That’s why his sights are already set higher: from MVP Individual to MVP Team.

Your Turn

With the MVP title secured, what’s next for CJ? He’s already setting his sights higher and aiming for the Top Team of the Quarter with his teammates in CIS.

“My target is not just to be the MVP of Individual Challenge, but to be part of the MVP Team.”

As the GT Cup continues into the next quarter, CJ’s story is a reminder that transformation happens when we show up, step up, and bring others along for the ride. And who knows, the next MVP could be you.
