Thriving in Complexity: Aboitiz Group’s Risk Forum 2023 in Focus

In the ever-evolving landscape of business, the Aboitiz Group once again demonstrated its commitment to management during the recently concluded Risk Awareness Month, culminating in the Aboitiz Risk Forum 2023. This year’s event delved into a multitude of risks, ranging from alternative transfer risks to people risks and the ever-present challenges of cyber and information security risks.

In an era defined by global pandemics, rapid technological advancements, and geopolitical instability, the importance of understanding and mitigating risks cannot be overstated. The Risk Forum 2023 brought together experts, risk champions, and practitioners from various business units to engage in insightful discussions on pressing issues that shape the current business landscape.

The event kicked off with a keynote address by Richard Zhang, Managing Director for Willis Towers Watson, who provided valuable insights into the intricacies of alternative risk transfer options. This set the tone for a day filled with knowledge-sharing and collaborative exploration of risk management strategies.

Mercer Marsh Benefits Country Leader Rohan Muralee took the stage for the second keynote, shedding light on the critical aspect of People Risks. As organizations increasingly recognize the significance of their human capital, understanding and managing people risks become paramount for sustainable growth.

The forum also addressed the ever-growing concern of Cyber and Information Security Risks. A panel featuring cybersecurity experts from within the Group, including AEV Chief Information Security Officer Charmaine Valmonte, alongside UnionBank Chief Information Security Officer Joey Ruffo, and Bluepoint Institute of Higher Technology Foundation Director Engels Antonio, provided a deep dive into the evolving threats and strategies to safeguard against them, emphasizing the need for robust cybersecurity measures in an interconnected world.

The forum concluded with a panel discussion entitled Everyone Is A Risk Manager shed light on the organization’s risk culture, featuring insights from the Group’s risk heads including AEV Risk Management Head Christine Kempeneers, AIC’s Erwin Jallorina, UBX’s Eugene Daga, and UnionBank Head of Operational Risk Management Ruth Calamba. This discussion underscored the importance of fostering a risk-aware culture throughout the organization to effectively identify, assess, and mitigate risks.

As the Group continues its great transformation into the Philippines’ first techglomerate, the forum emphasized the importance of not merely minimizing risks but also taking the right amount of risk at the right time. Achieving organizational goals requires a balanced approach to risk, where informed decisions and strategic risk-taking contribute to sustainable success.
