Dear All,
Here you have a man who is a realist.
“Emotion is the enemy of reason.” – Spinoza
We have a serious problem. One of the main drivers of electricity per capita and per minute is hair dryers — 1,500 watts blasting away and surging up and down in the billions worldwide powered by fossil fuel or nukes. We are going to have to encourage people to air dry your hair — just think of the unintended consequences.
Put that way, we have a problem.
Bill Gates simplifies and brings in realism.
We should all read this or suffer the consequences of air drying hair. I cannot even begin to think of the chaos that might cause.
Mabuhay!

How To Avoid A Climate Disaster was an interesting window into how Bill Gates thinks. He tries to reconcile two values: his regard for poor people and his conviction that we must eliminate all of mankind’s net greenhouse gas emissions (“get to zero”) by 2050. Instead of examining or even reviewing the science underpinning his climate-change conviction, he makes the rest of his ideas get the world to zero-net emissions.
When we sold Indianapolis Power and Light Co. in 2000, I was not convinced whether or not the global warming theory was scientifically compelling, but I did feel it threatened the financial value of our 100% coal-fired utility.
Twenty years ago, neither Earth’s climate nor mankind’s impact on it was well understood. Are they now? Then, some of us were arguing to get aggressive with the science. Among other things, we wanted to know planet Earth’s threshold dose for man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Gates says it’s zero. Why did it matter? Because not only would Americans be less comfortable when energy costs went up, but lots of poor people elsewhere on Earth could lose out on the opportunities energy brings.
In the early 80s there was hope that, one day, magnetic fusion would make electric power available everywhere. Now, Gates envisions desktop fusion (not to mention electrofuels). There is a price point at which such breakthroughs would solve the political problem of climate change, but I’m not yet betting any of those will be economic on Gates’ timeframe.
Gates is like most Americans who want to have their cake and eat it, too. I’d bet there are people in the Philippines who’d settle for just eating it.
My advice would probably be that you think hard about what you wish for from the Philippine government. If it helps others, I’d get busy making the wish come true.
