Aboitiz Renewables continues to develop indigenous RE amid PHL energy emergency

Amidst a state of national energy emergency in the Philippines due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Aboitiz Renewables Inc., the renewable energy arm of Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower), said that it will continue to build a cost-effective diversified portfolio of generation capacity that harnesses from indigenous sources.

The Philippines is a net energy importer and is significantly exposed to the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, wherein around 25% of the world’s oil and 19% of global LNG trade transits.

“This is definitely a crisis, however our strategy hasn’t shifted. We’re really focused on continuing to develop affordable sources so that, in the future, we are continuously delivering affordable renewable power, as well as diversified baseload power, for the country,” maintained Aboitiz Renewables Chief Growth Officer David Mikel Aboitiz during the Manila Times 2026 energy forum.

Aboitiz Renewables develops, builds, operates, and expands a diversified portfolio of renewable energy projects — spanning solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and energy storage — with more than 1,800 megawatts of renewable energy capacity in the pipeline.

For 2026, Aboitiz said that the Company will commence with the 640-megawatts worth of projects it won in the 4th round of the Green Energy Auction Program or GEA-4 last year. “We won several battery and solar projects, a wind project, [and] a floating solar project. This year [is about] beginning to start developing some of those and ensuring that we deliver them on time as committed.”

Earlier this year, the Philippine government officially turned over stewardship of the Caliraya-Botocan-Kalayaan Hydroelectric Power Plant (CBK HEPP) Complex in Laguna to a consortium led by Aboitiz Renewables.

“We continue to develop our pipeline for affordable renewable projects… and implement and ensure efficiency of the assets that we [won] last year. We won the CBK asset for the pumped storage. [We want to] ensure that we run that as best as we can,” he said.

CBK HEPP — particularly its Kalayaan pumped-storage units — serves as a critical energy buffer for the Luzon grid. Its ability to store energy and rapidly dispatch power strengthens system stability, provides essential ancillary services, and supports the integration of renewable energy sources.

According to the Energy Regulatory Commission, AboitizPower is the market leader in power generation capacity, with a national market share of 23.86% as of July 2025. Together with its partners, AboitizPower offers the largest renewable energy portfolios in the Philippines based on installed capacity under its operational control.
