Aboitiz Construction Team Members Spends Earth Month Through Urban Gardening

To promote food sustainability and the core value of responsibility, Aboitiz Construction team members availed seedling packets from the Department of Agriculture last year. Team members grew the seedlings and started their own vegetable gardens.

In celebration of Earth Month, Aboitiz Construction showcased their four month-old Urban Gardening produce, realizing the company’s goal of contributing to the growing support to food sustainability efforts in local communities.

Strongly aligned to its value of responsibility, the company adopted the Department of Agriculture’s Ahon Lahat, Pagkain Sapat (ALPAS) Kontra sa COVID-19 Program, our contribution to promoting food sustainability, health, & wellness.  In December 2020, the Philippine Bureau of Plant Industry provided vegetable seedlings and planting trays to encourage and support Aboitiz Construction’s Urban Gardening program.  Packets of mixed seedlings and accessories were distributed to team members who were interested to till, mulch, sprout and harvest vegetables from their yards.

Small gardens emerged at their homes and around the project staff houses.

“The project helped me to have easier access to food because it provides me with fresh vegetables without chemicals in it. Also, I can easily get it in our own backyard, without the hassle of going to the market and searching for it,” shared by Evelyn Tagpuno, Commercial Management Staff.

With a successful pilot and a growing interest among team members, the urban gardening efforts will expand to earth-gentle projects such as waste management, environment protection training programs that will benefit the company’s host communities.

“From greening urban spaces, we want to do more.  With employees’ involvement, we will carve Aboitiz Construction’s path to building a better and greener future.  When our team members choose kindness towards the environment and volunteer to make a positive impact in communities, we fulfill our commitment to our values of responsibility, integrity, and teamwork.” said Nina Ylagan-Pedro, VIce President – People, Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Aboitiz Construction Group is the construction arm of the Aboitiz Group of Companies, one of the most prominent conglomerates in the Philippines. Aboitiz Construction is a privately-held company, with a 45-year track record in value construction and engineering.
