INFRATALKS: Connecting People and Possibilities: When Airports Go Beyond Places

First published in InfraTalks, Aboitiz InfraCapital’s monthly column in The Manila Times.

There is a reason airports often feature prominently in stories about life-changing moments – even in some of the television shows and movies I have seen over the years.

Whether it is the frantic race to catch a flight in The Amazing Race, the emotional reunions depicted at the start of Love Actually, or the unlikely friendships formed in The Terminal, airports have long served as settings where journeys begin, lives intersect, and possibilities emerge.

In the real world, however, the significance of airports extends far beyond the departure gate.

At best, airports are not simply transportation facilities, but also platforms that connect you to people, places, and possibilities.

This belief has guided our work across Aboitiz InfraCapital Airports—from the award-winning Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) to Laguindingan International Airport (LIA) in Misamis Oriental, and Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA).

Building Better Journeys – One Gateway At A Time

The one year since our takeovers of LIA and BPIA has reinforced an important lesson. Airport transformation is not solely about building better infrastructure, it is equally about creating better experiences.

Travelers may notice new facilities, upgraded equipment, and smoother processes. But behind every improved journey is an ecosystem of people working together—airport operators, airline partners, government agencies, security personnel, concessionaires, and frontline staff—all committed to delivering a more seamless experience.

At MCIA, years of investment have helped establish Cebu as one of the country’s most important transfer hubs. Beyond serving millions of passengers annually, MCIA continues to strengthen its role as a regional connector through flagship initiatives such as CEB Connects, which makes transfers between domestic and international flights more efficient and convenient. In doing so, MCIA helps position Cebu as a strategic hub linking Visayas to the rest of the Philippines and the world.

In Misamis Oriental, LIA serves as a vital gateway to Northern Mindanao, supporting the mobility of people, goods, and opportunities across the region. Since assuming operations, our focus has been on improving reliability, enhancing passenger flow, strengthening operational coordination, and elevating overall service standards.

These may sound like incremental improvements, but they matter greatly to passengers whose journeys depend on consistency and efficiency.

“Strong partnerships between government and the private sector can be an important key to help ensure that our airports keep pace with growing demand. By working closely together, we can accelerate the development of gateways like Laguindingan to better serve passengers and support regional growth,” said Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Z. Lopez previously.

Similarly, at BPIA efforts have centered on improving the travel experience while supporting the province’s growing tourism economy.

As one of the country’s premier island destinations and home to the Philippines’ first and only UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol depends on reliable air connectivity to sustain visitor arrivals, support local enterprises, and create jobs for communities that benefit from tourism.

The Human Side of Aviation

None of these gains should be taken for granted.

The aviation industry continues to face significant challenges—from geopolitical risks, evolving security requirements, infrastructure constraints, weather disruptions, and the need to balance growth with sustainability. Today’s airports must address not only physical capacity but also operational resilience, customer expectations, and environmental responsibility.

Meeting these challenges requires more than capital investments. It requires a culture of service.

One of the most important transformations we have pursued across our airports involves what I often describe to my team as the “soft infrastructure” of aviation: how people collaborate, communicate, and serve.

Technology can reduce waiting times. Infrastructure can improve passenger flow. But it is the professionalism, empathy, and commitment of airport teams that ultimately shape how travelers remember their journey.

The achievements we celebrate today are the result of thousands of individuals embracing a shared purpose—to make every airport experience safer, smoother, and more welcoming.

Developing Gateways to Growth

And the impact extends far beyond the terminal.

Research by Airports Council International Europe identifies airports as catalysts for wider economic activity, helping enable tourism, trade, investment, and business growth across regions. For every 10% increase in direct air connectivity, a 0.5% increase in gross domestic product per capita and a 1.6% increase in employment is recorded. These findings underscore a reality that communities often experience firsthand: stronger connectivity creates stronger economies.

As regional gateways in the Philippines continue to be developed, airports are now helping decongest Metro Manila while bringing tourism, investment, employment, and economic opportunities closer to local communities. Rather than competing with one another, airports such as MCIA, LIA, and BPIA strengthen a broader national aviation network that expands access across the archipelago.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. captured this vision well when he previously described airports as “open doors to new opportunities for tourism and economic growth.”

In summary, I believe that the true measure of an airport is not found in aircraft movements or terminal statistics alone.

It is found in the businesses launched after a flight lands. The families reunited at arrival areas. The tourists discovering new and thrilling destinations. The students pursuing fresh educational opportunities both in and out of the country. The investments that create jobs and strengthen communities.

We often think of airports as places on a map. In reality, they are much more than that.

They are platforms for endless possibilities.
