AdventEnergy, Aboitiz Power Corporation’s retail electricity supply arm, signed an 896-kilowatt retail electricity supply contract with Viking Cold Storage Inc., marking the company’s continued expansion into Mindanao’s growing cold chain sector.
Viking Cold Storage operates a one-hectare cold storage facility in Bunawan, Davao City, equipped with loading docks, freezer and chiller rooms, and an ethylene glycol refrigeration system connected to a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The facility also has two 10-metric-ton blast freezers designed to maintain food storage quality.
Located near Davao City’s airport, seaport, and downtown area, it is accessible to businesses that require temperature-controlled storage to extend the shelf life of their products.
The partnership marks AdventEnergy’s continued expansion into Mindanao in support of the Energy Regulatory Commission’s Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program, which was just implemented in the region in 2024. RCOA allows qualified electricity end-users like Viking Cold Storage to freely choose and directly transact with a power supplier.
“The facilities we power do not operate in isolation. Rather, they are part of a chain that feeds communities,” explained AdventEnergy Vice President for Retail Energy Sales and Services Catherine Del Villar-Pasilaban. “In the cold chain industry, reliable power is not optional, but a critical business imperative that keeps food safe, fresh, and on the table.”
Cold chain infrastructure has had significant government support in the past few years. In 2024, the Department of Agriculture allocated P3 billion for 99 cold storage facilities in 2025, meant to mitigate postharvest losses.
“Viking Cold Storage was built to set the highest standard for cold storage in the Philippines. Entering the retail electricity market gives us the confidence that our facility will have the reliable, competitive energy it needs to deliver for our clients,” said Viking Cold Storage President Jimmy Ngo.
The signing adds to AdventEnergy’s serviced cold chain facilities, which most recently included a retail electricity supply deal with Frabelle Cold Storage Corporation, aggregating two facilities in Navotas.
